(Wouter Mijland)

Jungle classroom!

“Jungle classroom”

When you hear tropical forestry, you immediately think of the rain forests of South-America, Africa, and Asia. As students participating in this study, we want adventure, excitement, and thrilling nature experiences. Unfortunately, most of our study time we spend in the classrooms of Van Hall/Larenstein University of applied sciences.
This year, we finally have the great opportunity to leave the classroom and to carry out the work we are trained for in the Surinamese rainforest. Not only to explore the hidden mysteries of the Guiana Shield, but also to develop a responsible community forestry management plan for 15,000 ha of rainforest.
Between the 25th of November and the 18th of December, a group of enthusiastic tropical forestry students will be gathering data on biodiversity, timber production, and social needs and interests. The data will serve as a base to complete the necessary forest management plan for the 15,000 ha of community forest. Langatabbetje, literally translated ‘long island’, is the place where it all happens. It is located in the Sipaliwini district bordering French Guiana, in a relatively new ressort named after the local tribe, ‘Paramacca’.
Van Hall Larenstein University will conduct this project along with students of NATIN (Institute for Natural Resources and Engineering Studies) and ADEKUS (Anton de Kom University of Suriname). The executing agency and supervisor is the Ministry of RO.
During the project, the students of Van Hall Larenstein University will share their experiences with the outside world to inform the home front on their progress through this blog!
